The British Once Built a 1,100-Mile Hedge Through the Middle of India
- aurizon 5y agoThis was a huge hit to the budget and they had to save up their taxes for a few years to do it....
- perl4ever 5y ago"First you must find... another shrubbery! Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle"
- samoit 5y agoMiles? What the hell is a mile? You mean kilometers?
- rendall 5y agoAtlas Obscura: definitely not GDPR compliant. Modal "We use cookies" with gigantic "I Accept" button. The tiny "cookie policy" link does not show any kind of opt out, but does show a baffling encyclopedia of paragraphs and accordions, obviously designed to exhaust you. Just open in incognito mode and click "I Accept"
- ncmncm 5y agoWe should never neglect to mention robbing India of £40T, besides. (Or was it $40T? With numbers like that, it hardly matters.) It is hard to say what the half of North America the US robbed from the "other Indians" ought to be assessed at.

- Guessnotgauss 5y agoYeah, you're being sarcastic by using past history. Nice... Maybe we could cancel some debt. Living in a world where might makes right dosent end well for anyone. Not even the victors, not anymore. While we can't change the past we can learn from it, like South Africa. It takes some truth and reconciliation to make things better. Not perfect. That's the goal, move the bar a little higher. Not solve everything all at once, that's impossible. Better than " O well, thats history." Its easy to make jokes, do the hard thing. That negativity really dosent add to anything.
- panick21_ 5y agoThe problem I have with these numbers based tallies of history is that it the exact opposite of what you suggest. Its not a constructive rework of history, acknowledgment and 'Vergangenheitsbewältigung'. Its a political hammer to demonize and to demand reparations for a history that most people that were involved are long dead. And somebody that wanted to make the opposite argument could make it by using different assumptions. To make such numbers based argument you need are realist alternative to compare against and we can endlessly argue about that. When we talk about history we both need to talk about the exploitation of Bengal and we need to talk about how India is a democracy and how that is pretty crazy state of affairs that one would have considered highly unlikely in 1600. Considering every other great gun-powder empire is not a democracy. Trying to sum up 500 years of history into a single monetary number is not 'Vergangenheitsbewältigung' to me. P.S: And btw, as I Swiss person I would really like some of that sweet French and Austrian money. Thanks.
- thunkshift1 5y ago> “ Later in India’s history, road designers looked at the long, flat embankments that cut through the country as an infrastructure asset. The hedge’s path was, in certain areas, transformed into a series of roads. “ Calling BS on this without the author providing any sources.
- ashwagary 5y ago>The British once built I have a strong feeling Indian labourers built 100% of this hedge.
- JoeyBananas 5y agoWe're building a hedge and India will pay for it
