- d23 5y agoThere was an attempted coup in this country, it has still not been fully acknowledged internally, and the danger is still present.
- snypher 5y ago"The chief prerequisite for a coup is control of all or part of the armed forces, the police, and other military elements." I don't think it was even close to a coup.
- tssva 5y agoTrump placed loyal allies into key positions at the Pentagon in the weeks just prior to Jan. 6th.
- throwawaysea 5y agoThe use of words like “insurrection” and “coup” just feels like propaganda spread by news media and extremists activists, and unfortunately they have succeeded in bringing it into common use. It’s amazing to me that so much focus has been drawn onto this event, with such hyperbolic and inaccurate use of terminology. It feels like this investigation is the political left’s equivalent of the Benghazi investigations, where undeserved focus and outrage lingered for months. Meanwhile the far greater damage, deaths, and impact of BLM riots from 2020 remains ignored and even downplayed by all the same actors.
- d23 5y agoHence “attempt” and not success. The goal quite plausibly was to the lay the conditions for deploying the military, as he had tried to do in the past against protestors. We aren’t (yet, thankfully) in a place where a president could do such a thing with no pushback.
- throwawaysea 5y agoThe article title seems to suggest something sinister but I am not sure there was anything sinister here after reading all that. > There was no evidence the Kremers and the other rally organizers encouraged or planned violence in the group-text messages reviewed by Rolling Stone. Okay. So is this any different from people using Telegram to plan BLM protests or other events and wanting to stay anonymous? > However, critics have argued that Trump and the leaders who encouraged thousands of his supporters to come to Washington as the vote was certified deserve some blame for the violence because of their pre-Jan. 6 rhetoric and the fiery content of the former president’s speech at the Ellipse rally. Yes and what’s wrong with Trump holding a rally? Tens of thousands went to DC that day (the permits for the event anticipated 30,000), several thousand (close to 10,000) marched from the rally to the Capitol, and only around 500 entered the Capitol grounds, most of whom didn’t do anything more than trespassing. As for Trump’s speech - he didn’t incite any violence in it. In fact the transcript shows he literally called for a “peaceful” march to the Capitol from the rally.
