I'd say, yes.. Backend can be as little as one or two languages on one well-controlled platform, with a primary focus on maintainability and performance. Frontend is three languages on multiple slightly different platforms (browsers), in addition to maintainability and performance, it also has to look subjectively good. I'm a backend dev.
