- rektide 5y agoAnother example: Twitter has been going through (& failing to find for months on end) compliance offers in India at a pretty good clip. Jailable compliance officers. Here's them hiring another round in late September: [1]. Nations keep trying to force extreme physical liability on companies. It's grotesque, nations keep insisting that there be hostages to take. It's just absolute scum-shit. I can get that they're pissed off that the world doesn't cater to their whim, doesn't feel like obeying their whim. So they insist that they have someone around to leverage state-sponsored violence again. Utterly pathetic, just transparently weak as shit loser behavior. I don't know what to say. I don't want to just say countries can't make laws, can't try to self regulate. But the internet perceives censorship & obstruction as damage, & routes around it. Upping the game by making sure there are prisoners to take is repulsive, I have no sympathy for this. I don't know what to do, because I kind of want countries to have some right to try things. But I see no path forward to having hundreds & hundreds of different internets semi-interoperating, nation-nets stitched loosely together each with their own laws & firewalls between them. I don't believe the frontiers of tech & possibility can flourish when every nation on the world gets a say on how you have to have your net presence work. A large part of me thinks we should provoke & escalate against these provocateurs, that the various entities on the internet should band together to resist the meddling of mere states, should make deep consequences, should sponsor & develop alternative access mechanisms & vpns. Again, I want to allow these nations their try, but these nations feel less important than the internet they are hurting.
