i think a better approach would be more things like after school robotics programs and outreach to try and recruit historically underrepresented groups into them. not only do they provide additional space for engagement in a healthy environment, they also provide something that was always important for me when i was younger, longer goals or projects that learning lands in the critical path for. problem sets are pretty boring, especially grade school calculations, i always needed a carrot to do boring things.
