EU Parliament Takes First Step Towards a Fair and Interoperable Market
- dane-pgp 5y ago> for social networking services, this means interconnection on basic features “such as posts, likes, and comments”. If Alice is on Facebook, and Bob is on Mastodon, and they are friends in meatspace, then I can't think of a reason (compliant with this proposed law) why Alice shouldn't be able to let Bob see her Facebook posts (without him needing to create a Facebook account). The various nodes in the Fediverse have already shown that this is technically possible and users want it, so Facebook should expect an unsympathetic judge if they implement anything less useful than that. I can only imagine that Facebook would set the requirements for federating with them to be as onerous as possible, and that they would break federation often for spurious reasons (following the precedent of some Fediverse nodes blocking others for political reasons). To be fair, it's true that if Bob's node is malicious it can spy on (or alter/drop) Alice's messages that she shares with him, but Bob might feel the same way about Alice's provider, Facebook.
