Peter Flax: Why Sharrows Are Bullshit
- rektide 5y agoi know im one of 1/1000th of bicyclists for saying so but i detest separated bike lanes. i want to coexist with the main street, have options to use the street. i can move & navigate with the flow of traffic adequately, where-as with deciated bike lanes i have to keep re-encountering parallel streams of traffic & checking the situation. i'd way rather share the street, even given what utter entitled short-tempered & jeapordizing punks some drivers are. generally agree with the article. but i hear people pitching dedicated bike lanes a lot, as the article does. and they feel like they admit defeat. they accept that drivers are ungovernable murdering jerks. which perhaps isnt wrong. but especially when detached, i think we're sedning drivers the message that roads are theirs, and we are creating a worse far inferior form of cycling in the process. being able to bime about & enjoy the road, to feel freer than everyone else is divine & accurate & good, and bicyclists as much as anyone are giving up paradise & freedoms they should have for a confinement i think is oppressive when they are coralled into dedicated bike lanes. again im 1/1000 here, probably less. i felt great in my city, on streets. it feels like a fading joy, feels like popular urban design is taking away the greatness of the bicycle to me. but it does help a lot of peoe.
