Northern Ireland to Scotland bridge plans scrapped
- fiftyacorn 5y agoShame it was a nice way to bury the story of the Boris bridge in London that the pm wasted millions on
- simonblack 5y agoBritain is a small, poor country that can't afford anything that any more. When it was first considered, back in the 1890s when Britain was the world's super-power, it might possibly have been feasible.
- AnimalMuppet 5y agoThey in fact may not be able to afford it. But "poor"? That sounds like you have an agenda to sell or an axe to grind. First, in absolute terms, they are much richer than they were in the 1890s. Second, per https://www.worldometers.info/gdp/gdp-per-capita/ https://www.worldometers.info/gdp/gdp-per-capita/, Great Britain has a GDP that is 2.63 times the world average. That's... not poor.
- simonblack 5y ago'Poor', relatively speaking. In the 1890s Britain was the world's super-power, it was tremendously rich. It had an empire "on which the sun never sets". It drew much of its wealth from India, the "Jewel in the Crown". Maybe it's richer today in purely numerical terms, but it's nowhere near as rich in, what we would call today, PPP terms. In those days One Pound Sterling truly was the value of a pound weight of sterling silver. Today, not so much.
