I think Rust is a great programming language, but to be honest all this drama discourages me from using it as much.
I worry about whether using the language will become a political statement. I worry whether people who can't get along are making the best decisions for the language. And I worry whether a total team meltdown will cause it to become defunct or forked at some point.

Also I doubt there is more drama in Rust then in Python, Ruby or similar. It's just that in recent years everything rust get always a lot of attention. There is also not just "the rust Team" there are many independent working Teams, as well as a foundation. I don't think it becoming de-functional or fork-splintered is something you have to worry about.
- staticassertion 5y agoAs a rust user I really don't care at all about this stuff. Rust is bigger than any of these teams now, and it has been for a few years. I have a lot of confidence that the language will continue forward in a healthy way, and that governance issues will ultimately smooth out. I only care insofar as I have been a part of the rust community for 6 years or so, and I care about others in the community.
- smarnach 5y agoRust overall has a nice and welcoming community. If you want to get an impression, look at the "help" section on https://users.rust-lang.org/ https://users.rust-lang.org/. I'm a (currently inactive) member of the crates.io team, and haven't experienced any drama so far.
