From the article:
"I am reminded of a conversation I had with the editor of a New Right publication. He expressed regret over the role that the American Revolution plays in American political theology, a “ghost” he wished Americans could “exorcise.” As long as we associate revolution with foundation, he told me, it is difficult to have any kind of “pro-society worldview.”"
I've always taken issue with the term "American Revolution," despite its common usage. Revolution, as far as I can tell, is characterized by an attempt to overthrow kings and clergy and, in later versions, destroy the wealthy elite. What we had here was simply a war for independence from British rule, which is why I am always careful to call it The War for American Independence.
It seems that fixing this label would go a long way toward resolving some of the cognitive dissonance here.
