The key is how good the abstraction is. This has technical and social aspects. Technically, the issue is if you can think about the abstraction without worrying over its implementation i.e. can the hidden remain hidden? All abstraction leak; perfection is impossible here (consider computational arithmetic addition), but it can be pretty good for a specific task at hand. Socially, abstractions need to be known, learnt, understood, so it's better to directly use concepts that are already known by users, present future and potential (here, users as developers).
