“Woke” has entered a subcategory of the lexicon where it is so transparently used to rile straw man debates that any time its used anymore, I instantly become disinterested in the topic. Similar words include “snowflake” and “safe zone”
I’d love an extension to block this kind of baiting nonsense everywhere.
- dimgl 5y agoAlthough some people might use "wokeness" as a strawman, it is anything but. Not sure why this makes you so mad. Ignoring it doesn't make the problem go away.
- dymk 5y agoIt was a pretty well written article, and you might find you agree with some of it if you give it a read. You’re right that “woke” can mean many things to many people, to the author, it refers to the “diversity/history of oppression” classes she took at her university. Ultimately, one of the things the article advocates for is having more thoughtful, well intentioned reactions to the foibles of others, rather than assuming bad intent.
- anonymoushn 5y agoFor what it's worth, the article is a firsthand account of the experience of a disabled woman in a male-dominated discipline, and maybe we shouldn't dismiss it over word choice in the title. Of course, this is hacker news, and we come to the comments section to comment on the titles.
