The story doesn't say who's doing the surveillance but the LAPD's Intelligence departments have a long and storied/scandalous history. https://crimereads.com/t

Laughs in NYPD, which has an intelligence department larger than many countries. Also, many (10?) years ago Boston Police were caught snooping around with fake accounts trying to find underground/house concerts by sliding into people's DMs. The DMs were hilarious. Super /r/fellowkids, stuff like "Yo whut up what's the 411 on the zip for tomorrow night's show? I won't tell the po po." Someone posted about it on twitter and people came out of the woodwork with stories and screenshots of similar messages from a small handful of suspiciously new, sparse profiles. Given Boston has one of the worst homicide clearance rates in the nation you would think our detectives would be interested in, you know, doing something about violent crime. But this is the city where you have to be licensed to have board games at your establishment, and apparently whether a TV is smaller or larger than 27 inches is of significant concern to the city: https://www.boston.gov/sites/default/files/file/2021/06/Annual%20Non%20Live%20Entertainment%20Application%20fillable%20Kim%20Janey_0.pdf https://www.boston.gov/sites/default/files/file/2021/06/Annu...
