"this hypothesis proposes that gay men respond to societal homophobia by overcompensating in achievement-related domains..." While it could be true, the obvious check on this would be to look at success in athletics. Do people who get an athletic scholarship, for example, turn out to be homosexual disproportionately often? Maybe, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out not to be true. Athletics also offers well-defined methods of satisfying societal expectations, if that were the mechanism.
