Why Dr. Manmohan Singh Deserves the Nobel Prize in Economics
- webmobdev 5y agoThe author's assertion that the Nobel committee should go beyond just considering the scholarly contributions of theories on economics to also consider the actual practical implementation of such theories as state policies is definitely an interesting one. And Dr. Manmohan Singh is an ideal subject for such consideration as he is a rare case of a highly accomplished scholar and professor, who was also a bureaucrat and later the Finance Minister and Prime Minister of a huge and complex country with varying economic problems. He lifted nearly 200+ million people out of poverty - why doesn't such actual practical applications matter?
- gumby 5y ago> why doesn't such actual practical applications matter? What makes you think they don’t? The first economics Nobel went to Simon Kuznets and in 2019 Banerjee, Duflo and Kramer. I don’t think politicians are generally good candidates for the economics Nobel but I think Singh is an exception, and it would be well deserved.
- webmobdev 5y ago> What makes you think they don’t? The article states that the Nobel committee only looks at scholarly academic theories in economy, and from that perspective, Dr. Manmohan Singh may not meet its criteria as he hasn't advanced any new study or theory on the subject that generated academic interest. What he has done is to use what he studied and apply them to craft effective policies - I guess that falls outside the purview of their interest in scholarly / academic study on the subject.
