I'd encourage anyone who has read or watched Fear and Loathing to go and read Thompson's earlier work Hell's Angels. It's a great look into the beginnings of the outlaw club, and is written in what feels like the beginnings of his gonzo style, albeit more reporter than Duke. It's like watching Thompson get a taste for the first time of the outlandish and exaggerated. A fantastic book.
- pimeys 5y agoI'll add here my favorite book of his, the Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72, him getting sucked into politics and following the Democratic party campaign against Nixon, that lead to a landslide victory for Republicans. It is absolutely a fascinating read about the addictive nature of politics, how something that feels like an easy victory, against a horrible president, where you think you have the people behind you and how everything collapses in the end... I think this is his masterpiece, I've read it a few times and tend to pick it up every ten years for a re-read.
