I helped manage dedicated servers in colo for a small company for a few years, and I don't have very good memories about it.
We had a cabinets with inter-connected machines, so we had our own routers, load balancers, two uplinks, etc. It's a lot of stuff to manage for maybe 25 servers (which ran VMs).
Currently I use OVH and Hetzner and find it to be the best of both worlds. Hardware isn't my problem, and the costs are low. We run ZFS and KVM, so moving a VM around is easy.
On another project though, we split $5k of hardware for a server with 20TB of disks, 4U. The server has been running for over 5 years without issues. For a single, special-use server, colo can be nice.
