As a Chinese I expect this: Peng Shuai is safe; Zhang is probably in investigation; investigation probably will last some time; Zhang is most likely over, if investigation finds evidence for anything else, he most likely will go to jail.
- xdennis 5y agoWhy do you expect her to be safe if she's not communicating?
- yumraj 5y agoIn CCP China, safe is probably a euphemism for being alive while in house arrest or prison.
- powerapple 5y agoI don't think she would be under arrest. She is probably kept safe or was told to remain silent before the investigation is done. I know it is so kind of backward way of handling the issue. The case would be postponed by the general CCP meeting, and investigation only starts afterwards. She would be questioned maybe, but I am fairly certain she will not face any danger. She may be asked not to give any comment given the investigation. And investigation normally would take some time.
- arvigeus 5y agoShe is probably in custody. I am very anti-CCP, but I don’t believe they are that plain evil (or stupid) to simply kill someone - mafia style. Especially someone with such high profile. Look at what happened to Jack Ma - he was also “disappeared”, but he showed couple of times since. Such a flamboyant persona like him to turn into a “monk” in just couple of months shows that CCP knows how to shut people up without harming them. When they release her she will also be put on a short leash and try staying lower than grass.
- phd514 5y agoHow is disappearing someone in order to intimidate them into operating "on a short leash" anything other than plain evil?
- davorak 5y agoPotentially you are talking about different things, the action and the organization. I can read > but I don’t believe they are that plain evil so that the writer does not think the ccp is just evil, meaning they are more than just evil. So the writer might think the cpp does evil things probably including: > disappearing someone in order to intimidate them into operating "on a short leash" but without making the cpp just or only evil.
- arvigeus 5y agoBy "plain evil" I mean a cartoon-like villains that do things (and laugh) just for the sake of being evil. What CCP are doing is playing a game of chess where they are after some end goal, thinking multiple steps in advance. Killing someone this public will have too much bad consequences later.
- newacct583 5y agoTo be clear: "safe" in this context generally implies more than merely "physically unharmed". It's quite clear that Jack Ma was coerced into giving up control of Alibaba. It seems likely that Peng Shuai is being similarly pressured. Having authorities (for example) scream in your face about their ability to wreck your career and that of all your friends and family is not what most people would consider "safe".
- uoaei 5y ago> without harming them Without leaving evidence of harm, maybe, but I wouldn't be so forthright as to claim that there is no harm. Torture tactics have become quite advanced and many leave invisible scars.

- e-brake 5y agoSafe, probably, but hopefully isn't going through what Ai Weiwei went through; 81 days in detention with two Chinese state military personnel looking over him 24 hours a day - while sleeping, going to the toilet... https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Expo_SACRED_Venice_ai_weiwei_1.JPG https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Expo_SACRED_Venice...
- chunghuaming 5y agoAs a Chinese I expect this: Peng Shuai, much like Jack Ma, has been kidnapped by the CCP, and tortured and brainwashed until she becomes a harmless sheep, much like Jack Ma. Then she will be released to do CCP's bidding, kind of like Jack Ma right now traveling in EU, trying to get EU secrets on farming to increase food production. Zhang, because he is part of the Jiang Zemin faction, which is against Xi Jing Ping action, will be dealt like most of Xi Jing Ping's opponent - crushed. Everyone should realize that basically, CCP is a gang. The biggest evil group of gangsters the world has ever seen. Selling body parts of concentration camp prisoners might just be the surface. It's hilarious that some people actually believe if US and the world somehow lost to CCP, we would be ok under CCP's rule. 傻逼他妈给傻逼开门真是傻逼到家了
- curt15 5y ago>Everyone should realize that basically, CCP is a gang. And as you would expect of gangsters, to get leverage on someone they go after the person's family (e.g. https://www.vice.com/en/article/jgxdv7/chinese-police-are-video-calling-citizens-abroad-with-threats-not-to-criticize-beijing https://www.vice.com/en/article/jgxdv7/chinese-police-are-vi...)
- sudosysgen 5y agoThere are no EU secrets on farming. You can just ask any farmer how they do it. The actual gap in farming efficiency between China and the EU is fairly low for most basic crops, see: https://ourworldindata.org/crop-yields https://ourworldindata.org/crop-yields and compare crop yield gaps. It's very unlikely Jack Ma is trying to exfiltrate "secrets" of agricultural production from poor European farmers. You can just go and ask them. There are not really any secrets.
- powerapple 5y agoThis guy knows everything, great! case solved!
