CNN tried Tesla's 'full self-driving' mode on NYC streets. It didn't go great
- Analemma_ 5y agoWell clearly that’s on CNN. What kind of person thinks “full self-driving” means full self-driving? /s
- randomopining 5y agoSelf-driving is gonna be a whole generation beyond wide acceptance of EV. It’s def two diff market battles. EVs prob mainstream in 5-8 years.
- abracadaniel 5y agoI kind of hate that Tesla made this such a focus for their cars. I think we’d have been better served by them being more focused on just good electric cars. It feel like I’m in the minority though, because it seems to have worked out well for them. Even with many years of delays, and many more years before things are solid, they’re as popular as ever.
- heavyset_go 5y agoPart of TSLA's trillion dollar market cap is predicated on a lot of retail investors believing that the Tesla cars they already own will one day receive an update that will allow the cars to act as driverless robotaxis, and that will generate income for their owners while they sleep.
- polishdude20 5y agoHow is this business model that much different than hiring a taxi driver, buying them a car, buying a license and forming your own one man business? Sure you now need to pay the drivers salary but your profit margins will be the same as with a tesla.
- abracadaniel 5y agoWhat I’m not sure about is whether the investors believe that will be the case, or if they just believe saying it will help the stock value. I see a lot of talk of how far Elon exaggerates, so I find myself wondering if it’s a bit of a shared delusion, where no one really believes the claims, but everyone thinks that everyone else believes it.
- fwoimpl 5y ago> driverless robotaxis that will generate income for their owners while they sleep. Do they really? The first image that sentence conjures is stepping into my shiny Tesla for my morning commute, only to be greeted by a noxious blast from the puddle of some 3am customer's vomit that's been fermenting since last night. As I reel back, coughing, the car's infotainment system starts playing a voice message, helpfully informing me that this vehicle has been banned from the robotaxi network due to multiple reports of unsanitary conditions.
- NikolaeVarius 5y agoIm surprised I don't hear more about self driving tests + training on NYC roads. You will see random crap in NYC all the time. A random block party that springs up that uses a few trash cans to block off a road. Road signs that don't make sense versus the painted road markers that force you to go "fuck it" and try and make the best of it People riding e-scooters or e-bikes on a non bike road right on the edges. So much shit to deal with
- numpad0 5y ago> So much shit to deal with That's why only the most established SDC companies, namely MobilEye and now Waymo are doing it in NYC. This fact also tells who "has it" and who's just sales talks and promises.
- chiefalchemist 5y agoNYC (Brooklyn) and similar are relatively outliers. They should have taken it to Nothern NJ or even North Eastern PA and see how it worked going from McMansion to train or bus station. Yes, this test - someday - would be ideal. But for now it belittles what otherwise could be a win for plenty of commuters.
- casion 5y agoThat undermines the "Full" in full self-driving.
- chiefalchemist 5y ago"Yes, this test - someday - would be ideal. But for now it belittles what otherwise could be a win for plenty of commuters." The point is, CNN went for glass 20% empty, instead of 80% full.
- alpineidyll3 5y agoWith this level of supervision reqd how is it a win
- ghaff 5y agoEven just interstate full self-driving (if it were really full, i.e. no supervision) would be a big win for a lot of people. I live about an hour from a major city. I could do most of the drive on interstates (and probably 75% on non-urban roads). And that would be a huge win relative to driving myself. For actual long distance mostly interstate drives? A huge win. While there's been some focus on this at specific car manufacturers, probably more interesting overall than the urbanite who wants a ride home from the bar.
- alpineidyll3 5y agoGet a comma 3!
- omarforgotpwd 5y agoIt will get better. The fact that cars are doing this with computer vision at all is incredible. Since it is just a driver assistance system, the user will only turn it on when they feel it is useful. The interior camera is used for driver monitoring to make sure that people don't use their phone / fall asleep etc. Encourage everyone to try this latest software if you can, it's incredible.
