15 Years Ago Google Closes Acquisition of YouTube (November 2006)
- kamphey 5y agoThere's one pesky question I have about Google acquiring YouTube. Most of the time I've seen acquisitions take over the product and adopt the product into their company. Usually changing the name or even adding a "by parent company". Both YouTube and Instagram acquisitions did not do that. I'm wondering if internally what that decision looks like. Why is it still YouTube and not Google Video or TV by Google. or Google Tube. or Google TV.
- 1cvmask 5y agoThey only bought YouTube because Google Videos failed miserably against it. The brand name was so strong by then and the name is great. Too bad Instagram and selfies are not named YouPhoto or YouFoto.
- redis_mlc 5y ago1) Youtube was a winning brand name. 2) Google had at least one more video product. 3) Google became embroiled in lawsuits with Hollywood that cost at least $1 billion to litigate and settle. Keeping a separate brand name makes sense when it might have to be jettisoned at any time.
