I setup jabberd in our org, back around 2008, when our President wanted a secure messaging system and downloaded some trial shareware to do this. I setup Pidgin with (I believe) the OTR plugin so everything was secure. I was surprised by how easy it was to get everything up and running, even with limited knowledge of Windows server administration. I just needed to write a few batch scripts to run on startup. Now we run Google Hangouts and are locked into their ecosystem. I miss open systems, even if I wasn't taking full advantage of them at the time.
