I would argue most of those people do not have any experience with, or understanding of those hotlines and it's just a trite thing to throw out to show support like "fuck cancer". As long as we keep rewarding it by pressing the "rightthink" button when we see it it will keep happening, just like every other cheap gesture that appeals to the lowest common denominator.
