Scientific American Goes Woke
- iab 5y agoA substack piece with woke in the subject matter, this should be in no-way inflammatory
- AnimalMuppet 5y agoYou might be surprised. It seems worth a read.
- leephillips 5y agoWell written and sadly confirmatory of the disaster that I've observed at S. A. I subscribed for years as a youth and young adult, but eventually let my subscription lapse as more and more space was diverted from science to dull treatments of politics.
- op00to 5y agoRambling is well written now?
- JohnHaugeland 5y agoIf it confirms one's pre-existing bias, the bitterest pill is sweet.
- jojobas 5y agoIt's a level, matter-of-fact piece with no spinning or twisting.
- JohnHaugeland 5y ago> One may be forgiven for thinking that anyone who sees in a lightsaber duel clashing penises has perhaps been reading too much Freud…or watching too much three-way porn. Disagree.
- jojobas 5y agoIt's fair critique of the quoted passage above.
- errcorrectcode 5y agoNo judgements. Let's suppose there were 5 gender identities. That would be 35 unique combinations. - tdeck 5y agoIt's also written by a sex predator, so there's that.
- AnimalMuppet 5y agoEvidence, or don't accuse. What are you talking about?
- tdeck 5y agoHow about just googling it, this stuff isn't hard to find?
- leephillips 5y agoHe was, as famous people often are, falsely accused of a range of misdeeds and crimes. Including a sexual assault allegation by a man. For some reason, the internet immediately recognized that allegation to be a fantasy, but gave credence to the equally fantastic allegations by women.
- errcorrectcode 5y agoDoes that imply they could've been booted off Twitter and/or Medium, or does Substack offer more money?
- simonblack 5y agoThe Scientific American lost its way about 10 years ago when science gave way to politics. I stopped reading it and buying it back then.
- JohnHaugeland 5y agoOh no, not virtue signalling. Let's all be impressed with how this anonymous stranger is too good for a magazine. Surely this reflects on the magazine.
- simonblack 5y agoNot at all. You can read it that way if you want. Scientific American is a very expensive magazine. I'm not going to spend my money on a magazine that isn't 'fit for purpose'. I want articles on science, not on politics.
- JohnHaugeland 5y ago[flagged]
- decremental 5y agoDid you have to practice to become this insufferable or is it a gift?
- JohnHaugeland 5y agoSick burn.
- dang 5y agoAttacking another user like that will get you banned here, regardless of how wrong they are or you feel they are. If you'd please review https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and stick to the rules when posting here, we'd appreciate it.
- marstall 5y agoI still subscribe - I don't know why they do so many politically-inflected articles these days. Always just skip to the harder-science pieces, especially physics, astrophysics, deep human history, the body, animal behavior, genetics etc. which are so often a delight. keep those flowing please!

- Larrikin 5y agoNot the most scientific study, but their results on the usage of the most popular slang by generation, specifically "woke", was a feeling I had for a while now https://preply.com/en/blog/most-popular-slang-in-america/#scroll-to-heading-6 https://preply.com/en/blog/most-popular-slang-in-america/#sc...
