It's a good route if you're lazy. I worked my ass off as an IC and always joked with manager friends that they don't work too hard. They didn't like that, but found out I was right.
It's not for everybody for sure, but if you don't like working it's better than solving hard problems.
- romanhn 5y agoHave you spent a significant time in management roles? I worked longer hours and had more stress in management than as an IC (with about 10 years of experience in each). That seemed to be pretty common sentiment among my peers. The "managers are lazy" cliche is common among folks that haven't experienced the other side and don't understand that people problems are harder and take more time to solve than technical problems.
