Show HN: FileCream – A web-based operating system
- culpable_pickle 5y agoAs an operating system, how can I execute arbitrary programs in it?
- ent101 5y agoIt's coming up. I'm testing it t the moment. This was way more difficult than I expected lol
- sopexe3525 5y agoIt it going to way more difficult until you spin up a VM somewhere in cloud. Basically what you're trying to is to emulate an OS behavior within JS and that's will have a lot limitation and performance penalty. Heads up: All the buttons and other UI component you see in a desktop app will not translate to html div or span so you would end up rendering in canvas.
- 1cvmask 5y agoWhat is your target market? Enterprise? And what is built on?
- ent101 5y agoI'm not sure yet. It's built mostly in vanilla JS for the frontend and node for the backend.
- schemescape 5y agoAre there screenshots?
- ent101 5y agoYes, if you view the website on desktop there is a screenshot on the homepage. I'm gonna add more, this is very beta right now. edit: https://filecream.com/assets/img/screenshot.png https://filecream.com/assets/img/screenshot.png

- pipeline_peak 5y agoIt seems more like a UI shell than an a full OS. Does this run web apps in standalone windows in it’s desktop? I’m just not quite sure what this is.
- JustroX 5y agolooks great
- seanw444 5y agoSeems to be a very similar idea to https://www.os-js.org/ https://www.os-js.org/
- c1yd3i 5y agoThis is the worst name for a product I've ever heard.
- ent101 5y agoCould you please explain why this is a bad name? I'm genuinely interested since English is not my mother tongue.
- alephaleph 5y agoFirstly, the title only vaguely relates to the product. Secondly, the word ‘cream’ outside of a culinary context usually either means some sort of medication you rub on your body, or it’s a slang word for ejaculation.
- ent101 5y agoI see. Thank you very much.
