Is It Ethical to Work at Facebook?
- MeinBlutIstBlau 5y agoIt's never ethical to be a lord in the feudal structure. Yet people need to be in those positions. You can't masquerade as some benevolent individual you're entire life. Pretending that you become some sort of "holier than thou" person on some simple principle issue for the sake of current cultural morality is astounding. Here is exactly what happens when you quit because you thought you were a "better person" for doing so: The position gets filled by someone else who wants the prestige or financial resources associated with that. It's just like from Scarface: "Never underestimate the other guys greed!" So while there are 1 out of 1000 people like you being moral and upstanding, there are 999 others who are not and will gladly trample you for that position. If you want better ethics, it doesn't start with you. It starts with the institutions that we enable and the people in which give them legitimacy. So if a venue gives people a platform that enables them some sort of power over others (think Twitter and accusational claims unfounded), the aristocracy give it legitimacy by firing or sacking people simply because of that. Which becomes a never ending loop of enabling people that desire these platforms with unethical practices.
- holonomically 5y agoWeird question. A much better one is: Is it ethical to work at any for-profit company?
