He started coding when he was 7. JS. He maintains an online website with all his JS code. Updates his own website. No screentime limits. No restrictions. I bookmarked developer.mozilla on his pc but he still prefers that dirty w3schools. I help out sometimes but that shitty language truly drives me up the wall. Sometimes out of spite I code up 1-liners in R and tease him that it'll take 100 years to do the same in JS. But he doesn't take the bait. I think kids are stupid in general. When I was his age I was a huge qbasic freak. My teachers told me then to use Turbo CPP for my pictures but qbasic was just so much simpler. I see my kid making the same mistakes now. oh well.
- tombert 5y agoWait, you think JS is worse than R? I haven't done a ton of stuff with R admittedly, but every time I've had to touch it it's the worst part of my day. JS is irritating, but I feel like its quirks are easier to get used to then R.
- aerovistae 5y agow3schools is really not that bad. I hate that it still gets such a bad rep. I don't use it myself, nowadays the MDN docs have long since exceeded it in comprehensive content and clarity, but w3schools is fine for people who are learning. I learned the same way 10 years ago. It has plenty of excellent examples and clear explanations. Yes, it has a couple of flawed pieces of information (like recommending document.write once upon a time)....but people really like to just crucify the whole site over that, and it's never made much sense to me. It's a frustrating case of experienced mentors not understanding what makes an educational resource good or bad and biasing towards what's useful to them as already-experienced coders.
- tombert 5y agoI agree; I've been coding for awhile now, so I don't use W3School for anything JS related, but I don't think it's so bad if you have zero experience with anything related to web development. Also, I honestly think that their Raspberry Pi + Node.js GPIO programming tutorial series is actually pretty good.
- code_diego_code 5y agoOne day he'll see the light. My coworkers are still saying the same about me when it comes to monads and functional programming. If nothing else, you can have your son write up a few one-function JS librarie, put them up on NPM, and hopefully collect some of Drew DeVault's money in time for Christmas.
