A big difference between the rubygems and npm ecosystems is that most gems tend to have a lot less dependencies themselves that JS packages do. Looking at a Rails project I've got open, it has ~100 gems in the Gemfile, and 200 gem dependencies overall. Compare that to one of the Typescript + React projects I work on, which has ~200 dependencies in package.json and 2300 packages in node_modules.
