The way I differentiate between intoverts and extroverts is this "introverts think a lot before talking" where as extrovers "talk and then may be think". You mentioned that intoverts find social events tiring is because of this, they always have to play catch-up with non-introverts during discussions. Hence introverts try to be in(and flourish in) an environment that promotes deep thinking. Social events are anything but deep thinking venues.
