Didn't something like this change already a couple of releases ago? I found it annoying for a couple of days and after that I have not really noticed any more. I have Xubuntu and run the Firefox release they give me. Last week there was an upgrade, but I did not notice any major change to tabs. Maybe the same change I saw a while ago ended up in ESR now? Just a wild guess, have not checked their release status for ages.
