Between stuffing non-monetized videos with ads, the dislike button thing, and capricious censorship, I'm seriously looking into self-hosting[0] my video and streamed content. Disregarding the difficulty of maintaining a following outside of the big platforms, do any of you HNers have experience with hosting your own video and streaming sites? What software do you use?
[0] I could also just switch platforms, but I have similar problems with all the big platforms. Vimeo is a potential paid option, but their streaming plans are a bit out of my budget.

- thebeefytaco 5y agoIf you actually get significant traction on any videos, wouldn't the bandwidth costs be stupidly expensive if you're self hosting?
- genewitch 5y agoIt depends on how you host it. If you go in with a collective for a portion of a rack in a data center, generally the transit, while not "cheap" is unmetered and therefore the "per client" cost is nearly negligible. Obviously if your service becomes insanely popular you'll need to upgrade your circuit - depending on the provider and the data center, obviously. Most providers will gently coerce you into racking a higher bandwidth optics than you're planning to use, like recommending 10gbit gbics instead of 1 or 2.5 gbit. However the price per megabit goes down significantly after the first 100, so, assuming you're merely sharing the cost with other rack users, again, it's negligible.
