Doug Stewart, now at VEIR (veir.com), had a company (Wattershed) that was doing undersea HTS cables about a decade ago. I think their first deployment was going to be inter island in Hawaii? Either way, this doesn't have to be hyper efficient. It just has to be better than "get lots of batteries". Like others, I'm more worried about redundancy / operational concerns than about power loss.
