The installment of the series linked above doesn't discuss machine learning at all. It just discusses a rule-set hand-coded with prejudicial bias. (-15 points for non-European name, -3 points for women...)
In other words, one guy who preferred Caucasian men as candidates for the medical school wrote the code with his preferences deliberately baked in. This was so obviously bad they got caught, sued, and ruled against.
