Did I get banned for testing post titles?
I've recently started a startup blog and been using HN to test post titles.
1. Is that inappropriate to do? My thought was that the ranking system would take care of that
2. Does HN have some kind of shadow banning? Either for users or my sites?
Thanks!
- PaulHoule 5y agoIt's just a very low quality blog. The kind of low quality content you'd expect to find on Medium but it's not on Medium. Burn it. Find something worthwhile to say. If you're having to make a self-deprecating title (e.g. "Occasionally valuable") because you're not proud of what you do you are just going to push people away.
- druk 5y agoCan you elaborate what's low quality about it?
- minimaxir 5y agoMore generic / not unique content, in a domain commonly associated with blogspam.
- PaulHoule 5y agoIt reads like a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy where whatever was interesting about the original was lost.
- PaulHoule 5y agoA lack of high quality. This is a good blog https://www.righto.com/ https://www.righto.com/ Ken started out doing very run of the mill projects with Arduino but writing about it with heart and he became an electronics genius who takes apart chips with microscopes. (e.g. going from discrete logic and/or C to making and understanding microchips is like going from model rockets to moon rockets) Just the selection of topic ("Startups") is bad. If you told real war stories or a compelling story from beginning to end it's one thing. As it is, your content is generic and doesn't say anything fresh or significant at all. It is like pornography that never gets to the money shot. I find the content about anxiety cringeworthy. Oh, you found it was helpful to meditate three minutes a day. How nice. I have struggled with anxiety, it has had profound effects on my career, my relationships and my body. I've made discoveries about it that are hard won and that are frankly beyond the pale. Some of those things I can't talk about because I'm afraid of getting arrested or sounding insane or like I am confabulating. I could not find some of my discoveries in western psychology and found out later that they were common knowledge in China 1000 years ago. There are things I couldn't do to save my life for decades where I then made a breakthrough that was like magic or science fiction. (Could anybody else replicate it? Would anybody else care? I don't know.) The glib nonsense you write is worthless to me. Most of all there is the fact that you're mystified that you're not connecting with an audience. Meditate on that for 3 days or 3 years and you might be enlightened. Go look at compelling business writers such as Eliyahu M. Goldratt, Clayton Christensen, Phil Crosby, and Jim Collins.
- _Microft 5y agoI think that either your account has been shadowbanned or your domain might have been blacklisted. That's usually happening if people post their own content exclusively. This is happening automatically and the reason for that might be this rule: "Please don't use HN primarily for promotion. It's ok to post your own stuff occasionally, but the primary use of the site should be for curiosity." from https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html Edit: since your comments show up fine, I think it is the domain that got blacklisted.

- mindcrime 5y ago1. Is that inappropriate to do? I don't know that the site guidelines[1] specifically address this issue, but I would personally consider it inappropriate. 2. Does HN have some kind of shadow banning? Either for users or my sites? I am nearly 100% certain that the answer is "yes" for both. Users can be shadow-banned and sites can be black-listed. All of that said the guidelines (or the FAQ[2], I forget) discourages making these kinds of "meta" posts as well. If you have a question about HN, you should probably just email the mods. I think it's info@ycombinator.com but dig through the guidelines / FAQ to be sure. If you email them and ask nicely and promise not to spam your own content all the time, maybe they'll agree to unblock your site (if it has indeed been blacklisted). No promises of course (I'm just a regular user here), but they seem to be reasonable people if approached in a reasonable way.
