Trapped in the Metaverse: Here’s What 24 Hours Feels Like
- 999900000999 5y agoThe year is 2030. Working remote is now the norm, but things are far from normal. An automated warning appears during my morning login. "Excessive un metaverse time detected, you have lost 15 performance points." We all knew not to lose pref points as well called them. No one knew how many points you could lose. Some lost 5 and saw their logins disabled within an hour. A friend of mine had lost 100 over a week, yet hadn't been fired. We knew of no way to gain points. I always theorized the points were meaningless and only served as a way to control staffing levels. What was my job, I was a customer VR consultant. If a customer was on the fence about upgrading to metaverse pro, I was to show them all of it's features. "Now with Meta24 you never have to take your headset off, it tracks sleep and can even improve it." I hated the pitch , it was a matter of time before I got reprimanded for not resting enough. I didn't mind VR, but the system demanded constant connection. The system's logic was you couldn't be ready for a customer unless connected. We had breaks of course, but these had to be scheduled. Micro disconnects, a disconnect of less than 30 seconds would lose the same amount of points as taking the headset off for 15 minutes. Yet I tolerated it, at 7pm exactly I was off work. I flipped a switch, "Work mode disabled, Mr Jones, the usual" "Sure, I'm always down for Meta sports, invite my mates for a match" My weekend begins.
