The essay is not arguing that GraphQL does not solve a problem, but pointing out that it can be misapplied. If you do not need to, as you say, "sparsely grab information from multiple resources", but have relatively fixed fetching needs, GraphQL is actually a bad fit. (The essay made this point slightly differently.) Additionally, there are other solutions to the schema problem.
