- josephpmay 5y agoI wouldn’t be surprised if there are DAOs out there doing exactly that. I know of one that is buying up carbon emission credits to drive their prices up in cap-and-trade systems to force corporations to reduce their emissions rather than buying credits
- fabatka 5y agoNot a bad idea, in developed nations I could see this happening in large scale. How would it be possible to evade the tragedy of commons? With restricted rights of the owners, perhaps?
- akudha 5y agoIn the case of forests, we can just turn them over to a team of conservationists - absolutely nothing to be done to them, except the minimum necessary to preserve them. No tourism, no logging, nothing - the only ones to access the forests would be scientists and conservationists. That would be my take. Imagine if we could buy Amazon forests and just leave them alone (or reforest the already fucked up areas of the forest because of logging etc). I guess the big value add here is probably the style of governance. Otherwise I suppose it would be just a normal non-profit organization?
- jakelazaroff 5y agoBelieve it or not, that is actually against the law. Lessees of public lands can be required to extract resources from them or lose the lease. https://reason.com/2019/11/18/why-dont-environmentalists-just-buy-the-land-they-want-to-protect-because-its-against-the-rules/ https://reason.com/2019/11/18/why-dont-environmentalists-jus...
