Linus Torvalds on Why ARM Won't Win the Server Space (2019)
- messe 5y agoI thought this was interesting in retrospect, now that Apple have switched to ARM on the desktop, and AWS are heavily pushing ARM on the server.
- fumer 5y agoAfter reading the thread, Linus sounds cautiously bullish on ARM on the server space. https://www.realworldtech.com/forum/?threadid=183440&curpostid=183447 https://www.realworldtech.com/forum/?threadid=183440&curpost...
- messe 5y agoOh, the whole thread is worth a read to hear the various views. For posterity, I should also link the previous discussion on HN from a years back, and from which I've taken the title and link: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19224579 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19224579
- mohanmcgeek 5y agoIs x86 on the server going to dissuade people from using ARM dev devices (specifically the M1 mac)..? Or is m1 going make ARM cloud a reality? I feel heavily towards the former for the next 3-4 years atleast because that's what I find myself doing even though I can run a Linux x86 Vm inside my Mac and cross compile fairly easily. Would the x86 on the cloud create a chicken and the egg kind of lock-in?
