I wish Google would bury the war hatchet together with Oracle. Their J++ take with Android is really getting far behind and starting to split the community.
Also, they've been doing very interesting things for the platform (a thread sanitizer IIRC). They'd be a stellar contributor.
If only Oracle could work on providing them legal-safe way to come into the community. Maybe by donating the Java brand to a foundation, and also enshrining the JCP process management into it?
So much good work opportunities have been wasted it's not even funny.
- josefx 5y agoHow would creating a foundation to manage everything make it "legal-safe" for Google? Participation in the JCP doesn't seem to have any weird requirements. However google might prefer a decade long lawsuit over paying the $5000 fee for commercial member organizations.
- dcgudeman 5y agoI like the fact that they are basically dumping Java for Kotlin. I think it will help Kotlin thrive and also set the precedent that if you sue a company for stupid reasons it will do more damage to your cause than if you had not.
- ksec 5y ago>I wish Google would bury the war hatchet together with Oracle I would be surprised if that happen. Considering Google and most of the vocal Silicon Valley think of Oracle as evil. And Google is not a company that seems to be pragmatic about these sort of thing.
- josefx 5y agoGoogle had been working on Android for years and released the first version two years before Sun was acquired by Oracle. The whole decade long lawsuit could have been avoided if they spend five minutes talking with the people who created and managed Java early on. Google never showed any interest in being a member of the Java community with or without Oracle.
