At a previous job we asked applicants about sort that had to satisfy some criteria like "more votes + same ration ranks higher" and "same amount of total votes, better ratio ranks higher" and (positive - negative) was the simplest solution that satisfied them all. That is not to say that (positive - negative) is perfect, but just dismissing it because it doesn't satisfy your randomly chosen criteria is just lazy.
