Only the winners get to write history. Early computer history has been rewritten to remove all mention of Commodore. They were the true pioneers of computing in business and the home during the late 70s and early 80s.
Apple's revenue through the 80s and early 90s was from the Apple II and when that revenue dried up then Apple cratered. Apple never managed to be profitable from Mac revenue until the late 90s to early 2000s, which was a good 15 years after the first Mac.

The references I've seen indicate that Apple stopped selling the Apple 2 in 1992 (though a IIe card for the Mac was sold until 1995) and that Apple's revenue increased until 1995 (remaining profitable through 1996) and didn't "crater" until 1997, the year that Steve Jobs returned (and fixed various problems including a confusing product lineup and Mac clones that were eating Apple's lunch.) (Note: The Apple article on Wikipedia could really use some improvement and some better source references.)
