Starlink’s new Dishy McFlatface is smaller and lighter, still costs $499
- AtlasBarfed 5y ago$500 is not much of a barrier to people with only viasat options. My starlink has been noticeably better over the last few months. I don't know if it's more satellites or better software to avoid the few trees I have obstructing. I'd guess they haven't done much for mobile/moving dishys with this, it's probably all just cost reductions over the original design.
- yesco 5y ago>There is one downgrade in the new router, as it doesn't have an Ethernet port like the original did. Starlink's website notes that users can buy an Ethernet adapter in the Starlink shop. That's a shame, even with the adapter being available I hope this doesn't become a trend.
- BugWatch 5y agoPlease don't support this Kessler-effect-inducing and astronomy-ruining nightmare. The latter is already happening, while the former might already be in its infancy. This "space littering" has got to stop, if not outwardly globally banned, until such time as appropriate clean up techniques are developed, tested, and deployed.
- aherz 5y agoAll Starlink satellites have relatively short life spans, after which they safely deorbit. Even if something were to go wrong they are in a low enough orbit where it will deorbit itself within months. Not exactly Kessler effect inducing.
- thuccess129 5y agoFactor in inflation and the price range of iPhone models and you see $499 is reasonable for what Starlink's gateway device does in the techspace of under served unreachable areas. Would be interesting to measure that value to industrial farming machinery parts and servicing.
- jmpman 5y agoWould it be possible to repurpose this hardware to build a scanning 3D radar?
