Apple won't stop until it makes third-party iPhone screen repairs impossible
- danlugo92 5y agoCtrl+f "theft" -> no hits. If they want to make stolen iPhones less valuable I think that's a worthy feature, similar anti-theft measures exists for cars already.
- fsflover 5y agoSo you agree to trade freedom for safety from theft?
- danlugo92 5y agoC'mon this is not data tracking (which I'm completely against) we're talking about.
- floatingatoll 5y agoI prefer iOS over a freedom-centric software/hardware platform, because freedom is not as high a priority to me as safety for my personal mobile phone. I would share that view with the majority of Apple’s users in the market, if they were aware of how platform freedom enables interception. It’s not because I’m unaware of the freedom-first ethos and its arguments. It’s because I believe in safety-first for consumer-focused devices. I appreciate that Apple protects me against evil maid attacks on my hardware when traveling. It makes me less afraid knowing that my screen and my sensors are crypto-paired and will throw up clear alarms if modified. I have far too much access to prioritize the personal convenience of freedom to modify my mobile device over the duty of safety against modification I owe to my users. You clearly disagree, and that is of course your right; I certainly respect your freedom to choose non-iOS platforms, just as I’m sure you respect mine to choose locked-down iOS. As you no doubt already understand, your ethos of freedom prohibits you from demanding that I prioritize your needs over my own. No harm comes to you from allowing my needs to be met, and there are thousands of alternatives that allow your needs to be met without restricting my choices.
- fsflover 5y ago> and there are thousands of alternatives that allow your needs to be met without restricting my choices. Could you name a few?

- floatingatoll 5y agoSorry, I’m bad with names.
- fsflover 5y agoActually, there are no practical alternatives to Apple and Google, which is why Apple denies freedom for almost everyone.

- atoav 5y agoI am for legislation that forbids devices that don't meet certain levels of repairability from being sold until they do. You want to create a product that only your company can repair? Fine – you just can't sell it then. You want to stop others from repairing a product you sell? Fine – you just won't be allowed to sell them anymore.
- avgDev 5y agoI switched from Pixels to iPhone and this really bothers me about apple. I had to switch my wifes screen on iPhone 11. Ordered OEM refurbished screen, replaced it.......and got a message this IS NOT OEM SCREEN. So, I looked into it, even a screen from another iPhone 11 wont work as they are programmed for specific device. This is craziness. While, I'm on topic of iPhones, many people told me that the ecosystem is just SO GOOD, everything just WORKS. I had issues with the apple watch showing notifications few minutes later. AirPlay is just complete trash and rarely works. I am so tired of brand loyalist, marketing and astroturfing. As a side note, I recently bought a "Gorilla Cart", great marketing, mostly amazing reviews, many positive youtube videos. Thing broke during first use, some of the parts were rusted inside. One cannot trust anything anymore. Apologies for the rant.
- BoorishBears 5y agoOut of curiosity, was having an Apple service place repair it out of the question? iPhone screens on the aftermarket are a crapshoot, even "refurbished" OEM screens can end up with non-OEM parts that aren't functional equivalents And Apple stores aren't the only place with the correct tools for the jobs, lots of smaller shops have done the Apple certification thing. I agree there are some repairs that are unreasonably expensive or difficult (ironically the back glass for example), but the screen and battery are both covered by pretty reasonable repair costs
- avgDev 5y agoI am a DIY guy. I like learning everything. I completely remodeled my current home, rebuild car engine, change water heater, build retaining walls, build computers, replaced laptop and phone screens for years. Why would I pay someone $200 if I can do the job in 10 minutes and for $90? For people like myself the current trend sucks. Even appliances are getting harder to repair.
- BoorishBears 5y agoI'm a DIY guy too, my home lab looks like a hardware startup, yet: > Why would I pay someone $200 if I can do the job in 10 minutes Because the supply chain for aftermarket Apple parts is absolutely bonkers. The part is "$90" because it's practically impossible to know its history (ie for the same $90 you'll find everything from actual OEM to "hybrids" to knockoffs) And if Apple sold it, I'm not convinced it'd be that much cheaper than $200 - Like I agree with the sentiment repairs are getting harder, but Apple is generally one case where I don't agree they're doing too poorly for self repair and sustainability, yet they're always getting called out. I'd wager even with the current repair situation, the average Apple device ends up providing value to a person way longer than any comparable device because of their stance on updates. The resale value even reflect that.
- buffington 5y agoApple said they will now make it possible for third party and DIY repairs to work. https://www.ifixit.com/News/55047/apple-says-it-will-fix-face-id-failure-on-third-party-screen-repairs https://www.ifixit.com/News/55047/apple-says-it-will-fix-fac...
