Multiple spillovers and transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in white-tailed deer [pdf]
- rossdavidh 5y ago"The geographic distribution and nesting of clusters of deer and human lineages strongly suggest multiple zooanthroponotic spillover events and deer-to-deer transmission." And, what is the difference between deer and, say, raccoons or mice or possums or squirrels or feral cats or any number of other common urban mammals? Well, at this point I'd guess the difference is that deer have been tested, and those other species, as far as I'm aware, have not. Quite possibly, in regard to covid-19, that's the only difference.
- tinus_hn 5y agoIn the Netherlands the minx farms were closed (and all the minx exterminated) because these were catching covid-19. Of course this could have been used to perform experiments that you can’t ethically perform on humans. But apparently we’d rather ‘navigate the mist’.
- pragmatic 5y agoDeer are systematically harvested and consumed by humans every fall. So tracking diseases is something natural resource/game fish parks do as opposed to say squirrels. Deer tags/licences pay for some of this.
