You offer no reasons for your answer.
As it stands, I think this is bad advice. There are plenty of potential downsides to staying in something that the OP describes as 'visceral hatred'.
The OP clearly has no problem learning on their own.
I've been on the 'hiring' side of the interview table many times -- I wouldn't think twice about hiring this person as long as they had a nice personality. They definitely sound like they'd be qualified for just about anything they wanted to do with software.
- jstx1 5y agoIt's not a question of "can OP get a job without a degree". I agree with you that they can. The question is "is OP better off in the long term if they drop out or if they finish their degree". I think that sometimes it doesn't matter too much, and other times dropping out it harmful, but it's never really better apart from a very very narrow and rare set of circumstances (e.g. Bill Gates dropping out of Harvard to start Microsoft). If a person has a similar opportunity that's much more attractive than university, then sure, I'm all for dropping out. But if you reason is that you hate your classes, that doesn't seem like a good enough reason to me (especially if you want to stay in the field). A couple of other factors - Regret from not finishing the degree. Many people struggle mentally with having this unfinished thing in their life and it bothers them for years. So much that many people go back to university later in life just to finish it. - Not everyone hires like you. Some companies won't give you time of day without a relevant degree. Especially given that OP mentions ML a couple of times and those jobs often require an advanced degree not just a bachelor's. Dropping out might close a lot of doors for OP if they're really interested in the field.
