>Some news emerged that Boeing believed that SpaceX could not deliver anyway and if they both didn't deliver the could renegotiate with NASA and demand more money. Unfortunately for them, SpaceX delivered without asking for more money.
Seems SpaceX didn't want to play that collusion (or prisoner's dilemma) game many government contractors play.
- capableweb 5y agoSpaceX and Boeing are in wildly different situations. SpaceX needs to do anything they can do gain contracts in the future, while Boeing is trying to extract as much value from their existing ones while not caring about the future. Boeing thought they were invincible and could just coast, SpaceX are punting today's profits into the future instead.
- panick21_ 5y agoSpaceX is motivated beyond the next government contract. They have a overarching goal and they are going there government or not. The contracts are just a temporary working with the government to advanced the overall goal.
- bryanlarsen 5y agoColonizing Mars is a multi-trillion dollar operation, SpaceX can't do it alone.
- panick21_ 5y agoI didn't say they will do it alone. I said they are working towards their goal and take government as they can but the future profit is not the primary reason. The primary reason is getting them closer to their goal.
- voakbasda 5y agoWe have trillion dollar corporations these days. Economically, this does not seem as far out of reach as you might think.
- Robotbeat 5y agoI definitely think SpaceX would do Starship deep space missions even without the government at this point, but I don’t think it is temporary at all. SpaceX gets a lot out of their relationship with NASA (massive expertise, testing capability, infrastructure, etc… SpaceX gave NASA some money for using some of their infrastructure for Inspiration 4), and NASA is a huge customer.
- panick21_ 5y agoI didn't say the relationship was temporary, or that is should be. I said any individual contract is temporary and extracting money is not the primary goal. The primary goal is advancing the overall mission. If government would stop handing out contracts, SpaceX would try to go on as best they can anyway. But of course as long as government is sharing in the goals SpaceX will use those.
