Free speech and democracy was on it's deathbed when free speech became less about the cultural phenomena of respecting ideas opposite to yours, and more about wether or not the FBI is going after you or not for your ideas. That was a while ago, and since things have not been getting better, things keep polarizing. The only way to reverse it would be to once again invigorate the idea of radically free speech. But neither side wants that anymore. Maybe it is for the better. Sometimes society needs to heat up in order to improve.
