The McMansion Hell Yearbook: 1981
- tibbydudeza 5y agoLooks like a set for "Scarface" - gaudy and kitsch made real.
- vondur 5y agoAs they say, there is no accounting for taste.
- tibbydudeza 5y agoOur house was built in the 70's so the tiles was all brown and had this weird picture of tree I think that looked like somebody was on a LSD trip. Nowadays bathroom/kitchen tiles are bigger and only in neutral light tones - in a few decades somebody will probably think WTF did they do in the 2000's.
- CapitalistCartr 5y agoThe early 2000s were boring. Since the advent of high-pixel screens in tile circa 2030, who wants to settle??? Everyone is ripping that old crap out.
- bitwize 5y agoYeah, that fad lasted about as long as it took for someone's smarthome to get hacked -- and goatse to appear on each and every one of those tiles.
- BizarroLand 5y agoImplying that wasn't what was already there...
- tibbydudeza 5y agoHe is implying that we will still live in houses - thinking trailer parks into the sky like Ready Player One.
- Bostonian 5y agoSome on the political left oppose the detached single family home. Condemning "suburban sprawl" filled with "McMansions" built by "greedy developers" is the rhetoric used to stop the rif raff from buying homes that they want.
- h2odragon 5y agoBah. No politics are necessary here. There's enough and more to mock in this home from the sheer dysfunctional excess. If a home is primarily a place for people to live, this place fails in many, many ways.
- tibbydudeza 5y agoNo house needs to be so big - US houses are insane in their sizes.
- soylentcola 5y agoI'm sure you can find "some" who say just about anything. Doesn't change the fact that this is just a blog that pokes fun at questionable architectural choices.
- CapitalistCartr 5y agoI don't object to Levittown at all. What I object to is that building any other way isn't allowed. The politicians talk about "Low-income housing" where I live, while sabotaging it all. Zoning, lending, prevent anything different, such as European-style mixed-use.
- nivenkos 5y ago> such as European-style mixed-use. Property prices in Europe are even higher than the US though (per m2).
- brianwawok 5y agoYou can't make a claim as broad of that. Compare say.. rural Poland vs SF. 100x price increase?
- h2odragon 5y agoI'm sure that was all much more tasteful and better aligned when it was first built... Sandstone gothic? Disco cathedral? perhaps not. Makes me wonder if that was the home of the folks who had the minigolf course and bowling alley in Lombard. Something about the stonework seems reminiscent of those places.
- Cerium 5y agoI learned a lot about architecture by reading McMansion Hell and then paying attention to details on my drives around the city. It is a great educational resource and a good laugh.
