PHP Is Killing Python
- ggm 5y agoFor some definition of "killing" For other definitions: No, its not. I don't think people are coding GPT in PHP. [1] There are people doing the exploration in Python libraries. I haven't seen PHP bindings for Kubernetes breaking out into the world. [2] (there is probably some variant of rule34 here, that if you mention something, there probably is PHP and Perl for it. Thus: [1] https://github.com/ldobreira/gpt3-php https://github.com/ldobreira/gpt3-php [2] https://kubernetes.io/docs/reference/using-api/client-libraries/ https://kubernetes.io/docs/reference/using-api/client-librar... (search PHP) oh well.)
- pelasaco 5y agoProbably the author tried to mean for web development? It is actually surprising how the PHP ecosystem reinvented itself in the last years, improving PHP itself and getting good ideas from other ecosystems (i.e ruby and rails) and offering it in a great bundle of robust code and great documentation. But killing python in all domains? It won't happen. Maybe we could see it recovering market share lost for django, ruby on rails or node.js.
- ggm 5y agoMakes sense. Django should be ended. PhP sucks but.
- BarryMilo 5y agoI haven't seen people bashing PHP in years. I think it's more trope than reality at this point.

- krisrm 5y agoI guess I don't even think of these two languages as direct competitors. PHP is highly geared towards web scripting, Python is highly geared towards... well, just about every sort of scripting, and a lot of other stuff too. I don't think PHP has nearly the versatility of Python.
- pelasaco 5y agoExactly. PHP defines itself as "a general-purpose scripting language geared towards web development". Python is for everything else. Even though Python is great as well for web dev, maybe it is not the default choice as it is for data analysis for instance.
- dave4420 5y agoThe P in LAMP stood for Perl before it stood for Python or PHP. And it started standing for Python at the same time it started standing for PHP. Why do I suspect the author wasn’t born back then and is just making up facts to suit their argument?
- pelasaco 5y agoI thought that too, but looking up the term, apparently not. From the Wikipedia (english version): "The acronym LAMP was coined by Michael Kunze in the December 1998 issue of Computertechnik, a German computing magazine.." where unfortunately it doesn't give a hint of the "P", but in the German version of the same article you have: "Der ursprüngliche LAMP Stack besteht aus den vier Komponenten Linux (Betriebssystem), Apache (Webserver), MySQL (Datenbanksystem) und PHP (serverseitiger Skript-Interpreter). Diese Komponenten sind wiederverwendbar und in unterschiedlichem Umfeld und Zusammensetzung nutzbar." which means something like "the original stack was composed by Apache, MySQL and PHP" References: - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAMP_(software_bundle) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAMP_(software_bundle) - https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAMP_(Softwarepaket) https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAMP_(Softwarepaket)
