I've never heard that interpretation. The Bonus Army was a result of WWI veterans demanding that Congress pay out war bonds early because the depression had devestated them economically. The president responded by sending some of the biggest names of soon-to-be WWII to tear down their camps and burn them to the ground with tanks and active duty infantryman. The biggest outcome of this is event is that active duty forces are sanctioned against being used on American Citizens on American soil. Congress never paid the war bonds out early and many of those people went back to war or their children did.

I thought that prohibition was much older? Also, it's more complicated than that. For example, active duty were used in Little Rock during the civil rights era, IIRC?
- kodah 5y agoYeah, you're right. So, there were no real substantive outcomes, and largely that event goes on forgotten in history.
- wolverine876 5y agoI'm glad you brought it up - I was going to include it but I couldn't remember the details well enough. It's included in every history of the period that I've read.
- alexeldeib 5y ago> I thought that prohibition was much older? Posse Commitatus Act of 1878. The Insurrection Act provides one statutory exception, which would have applied to Little Rock, but I’m not sure if that was the legal justification at the time. Edit: indeed it was. Here’s the presidential order: https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/sites/default/files/research/online-documents/civil-rights-little-rock/press-release-eo-10730.pdf https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/sites/default/files/resear... Note the references to authority granted US Code Title 10 Chapter 15 Section 332 which covers insurrection.
